ROSE HILL
HOW IT WAS NAMED
There is no actual proof as to how Rose Hill was named. In an article in the Douglass Tribune, May 15, 1908,it states the name of Rose Hill was probable given by the Quaker settlement in the spring for the wild roses blooming so beautiful upon the prairie.
In the book, History of Butler, 1916 by Vol Mooney, Mr. Himebaugh has written a chapter on Richland Township. In it he said the name Rose Hill was demised by Mr. J.H. Lowery who had a great fancy for roses and botanical culture and tried to beautify his farm by planting roses and shrubbery. It was call the Rose Farm. The name was carried to the post office established by Levi Williams.
I have a hard time with this story as the school was flamed Rose Hill when it was established Nov. 19, 1873 and the post office was established March 26, 1874. Mr. Lowrey's deed was dated Jan 4, 1877. Osage land was obtained by pre-emption and only six months of residence was required. It is very unusual one would wait almost four years to file for his patent.
Mrs. Marie Goley,grand-daughter of Eli Cox and daughter of John Goley says her father ran a blacksmith shop and store across the road east of the school house and he was the one who came up with the name "Rose Hill."
These are the ones I have found, you will just have to take your pick. I prefer the name given by the Quakers.
