Dear Curator:
Recently some friends of mine visited the Museum in Topeka.
They made copies from some book about Rose Hill, Butler, Ks.
I would like to dis-agree with some of the information in the article.
The article was surely taken from "History of Butler" 1916 by Vol P. Mooney, Chapter on Richland Township by L.D. Himebaugh, pages 193 through 210. To research Rose Hill you have to go back to Richland and Pleasant Townships as Rose Hill was not incorporated until Feb. 7, 1955
Mr. Himebaught must have written this chapter for memory for so many of his dates and happenings are incorrect. In this article he says Rose Hill got its name- from a Mr. J.H. Lowery who wanted to plant roses. The old time Quakers say it got it's name from the wild roses that grew on the prairie. Enclosed is an article out of the Douglass Tribune. The School was named Rose Hill in 1973 and the Post Office was established as Rose Hill in 1874.
All of the information I can find on J.H. Lowery was his patent was recorded on Jan. 4, 1877 and he sold his claim to Wm. Scully in Feb. 20, 1882. Between 1877 and 1882 his wife was appointed conservator of their affairs.
Enlosed is a list of the errors Hhat have been found in Mr. Himebaugh's writing.
Sincerely
Lois A. Mitchell
